Great Lakes Higher Education Group Awards $8.8 Million in Grants

The Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corporation in Madison, Wisconsin, has announced fifty-six grants totaling $8.8 million to colleges and community-based organizations in Iowa, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin working to help at-risk students prepare for and graduate from college.

Through its College Ready and College Success grant programs, Great Lakes aims to dramatically improve graduation rates for students from low-income households, students of color, and those who are first in their families to attend college. Now in their third year, the programs help support other programs that provide extracurricular instruction in math and English aimed at helping underperforming high school juniors, seniors, and adult learners prepare for college-level courses, as well as programs that work to identify struggling first-year college students early and connect them with existing tutoring, advising, mentoring, and counseling programs to keep them on track for graduation.

Recipients include Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland, which was awarded $262,507; Boys & Girls Club of Dane County in Madison, which received $623,623; St. Cloud State University in Minnesota, which was awarded $405,510; and Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa, which received $124,246.

In addition, GLHEGC awarded its first grants through the College Ready Continuation and College Success Continuation programs, which are designed to help support recipients of the 2013-14 College Ready and College Success programs.

"We are called to action by the mounting evidence that too many of these students enroll in college underprepared academically, and too many leave before earning the degree, diploma, or certificate they set out to earn," said Great Lakes president and CEO Richard D. George. "We fund programs that understand the root cause of what holds students back and take bold steps to overcome these obstacles."
