Greenwich Country Day School receives $12 million gift from NBA star

Greenwich Country Day School in Greenwich, Connecticut, has announced a $12 million gift from alumnus and NBA All-Star Donovan Mitchell ('12), his mother Nicole, and his sister Jordan ('17).

Mitchell attended GCDS — where his mother taught in the Lower Elementary School from 2007 until 2019 — from third grade through ninth grade. The gift from the family will create the Mitchell Family Scholarship Fund and the Nicole Mitchell Faculty Support Fund, with the former providing need-based financial aid to PK-12 students and the latter providing support to a teacher in each division of GCDS who has worked at the school for at least three years and who models the caring and enthusiasm that Nicole Mitchell exemplified. The gift also will support construction of the Determination Over Negativity Mitchell Family Athletic Center, a state-of-the-art gymnasium featuring an NCAA regulation-size basketball court.

"I know how lucky I have been to have the foundation of my education happen here at Country Day," said Mitchell. "This school has shaped who I am in so many ways, and I feel blessed to be able to give back and make the Country Day experience available for more kids, especially those from inner-city neighborhoods or with backgrounds like mine. Over the past few years on my NBA journey, I have made it my mission to champion the causes of equity, social justice, and equal opportunity, especially in education. There is no better school anywhere to carry forward this mission, and my family is excited to make this happen."
