Latin American news outlets receive $2 million for COVID-19 coverage

The Facebook Journalism Project and International Center for Journalists have announced grants totaling $2 million to strengthen coverage of the coronavirus pandemic by Latin American news outlets.

Launched earlier this year, the COVID-19 Latin America News Relief Fund Grant Program awarded grants ranging from $10,000 to $40,000 to forty-four organizations, publishers, digital producers, and community outlets in twelve Latin American countries for multimedia initiatives, the purchase of new equipment, and the development of reader-based revenue business models. In addition to strengthening coverage of the pandemic, the program is designed to help newsrooms combat misinformation, invest in technology, and keep journalists on the COVID beat.

Eighteen of the news organizations receiving grants also were selected to participate in the Reader Revenue Accelerator, a ten-week mentoring program led by former New York Times executive Tim Griggs.
