In response to the economic impacts of the novel coronavirus, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has unveiled a new operating model and announced a round of staff cuts.
Announced by LLS president and CEO Louis J. DeGennaro, the public charity's new operating model includes workforce reductions across the organization as well as changes to its organizational structures, processes, and constituent engagement efforts. According to DeGennaro, the pandemic "and its impact on the economy has dealt a major setback to LLS's ability to raise funds for our mission, threatening the future of our organization at a time when blood cancer patients and families need us more than ever."
The layoffs were made "with care and diligence, guided by a new operating model, which considered the new roles and skill sets needed for the future viability of our organization." The moves will entail "fundamental changes to our national and field organizational structures and roles, and significant changes to our field footprint" and includes a restructuring of fifty-six chapters nationwide overseen by four regional vice presidents into twenty-seven regions led by two territory vice presidents, East and West.
"Our lifesaving mission is what drives everything we do," DeGennaro said. "That's why we started with our mission priorities by evaluating how to maximize our investments in research, patient services, and advocacy. We then assessed how we work today and re-envisioned how we will work in the future."
