Liberal Arts Consortium Receives $1.25 Million From Mellon Foundation

Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, has announced a three-year, $1.25 million grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation in support of an initiative of aimed at strengthening global education at six private colleges in the state.

The New York Six Liberal Arts Consortium — which includes Colgate University, Hobart and William Smith Colleges, St. Lawrence University, Skidmore College, and Union College — will use the funds to launch the New York Six International Initiative, an effort to "assist...member schools in expanding the global aspects of their curricula and engaging students and faculty in the study of global issues, both at the[ir] home campuses and abroad."

Components of the initiative include the New York Six Upstate-Global Collective, a scholarly community focused on the themes of sustainability and human rights; a study abroad collaboration that will enable students to enroll in other consortium members' programs; language learning groups in  less frequently taught languages; and the New York Six International Student Community. The grant also will enable the consortium to enhance the New York Six Connected Consortium Partnership, which provides access to information resources across all six institutions as well as electronic and in-person interaction.
