Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon, has announced a $2 million gift from Portland native Lorry Lokey to provide recognition and financial support to outstanding professors in its College of Arts and Sciences.
The gift will endow the Lorry Lokey Faculty Excellence Fund, ensuring an additional revenue stream to help sustain the teaching, research, and creative accomplishments of the college's faculty. Last spring, the Business Wire founder established the Lorry Lokey Excellence Awards with an initial gift of $150,000. Since selling his company to Berkshire Hathaway in 2006, Lokey, who was among the early signatories of the Giving Pledge, has focused most of his philanthropy on education, where, in his words, it does the most good.
"Lorry Lokey has a deep belief in the power of education to change lives and society for the better," said Lewis & Clark president Barry Glassner. "Indeed, he has cultivated education in ways that have been called 'transformational' and 'catalytic.' We are grateful for his friendship, his generosity, and his recognition of our extraordinary faculty."
