Mead Art Museum Receives Gift of Contemporary Artworks

The Mead Art Museum at Amherst College in Massachusetts has announced a gift of more than a hundred and seventy works of contemporary art from a donor who prefers to remain anonymous.

The gift, which includes works by established artists such as Mona Hatoum, David Hockney, Thomas Ruff, and Cindy Sherman, also includes a significant number of pieces by emerging and mid-career artists such as Dario Escobar, Toba Khedoori, Robin Rhode, and Analia Saban. The gift also extends the range of media in the museum's collection to include new video works, photography, and sculptures in addition to paintings, drawings, and mixed-media pieces. An exhibition featuring some of the newly gifted pieces as well as other contemporary works acquired in recent years will open in September.

"We are so incredibly fortunate to be the recipients of a gift of contemporary art of this scale and scope," said Mead Art Museum director and chief curator David E. Little. "The addition of more than one hundred and seventy works of contemporary art will have a tremendous impact on our collection and supports us in our ongoing efforts to expand our holdings in ways that reflect the diversity of the Amherst College community."
