Awarded through the Morgan Stanley Foundation, the grant includes $1 million for food banks in twenty-one cities in fourteen states in support of their efforts to deliver food assistance and healthy meals to children and families. The remainder of the funds will be used to provide training and support for Feeding America and their member food banks. The grant boosts Morgan Stanley's support for Feeding America to a total of $23 million over the last ten years, during which time the foundation has supported more than a hundred member food banks in developing, launching, and sustaining critical child nutrition programs and expanding access to fresh produce.
Forty million people face hunger in the United States, including more than twelve million children. The issue takes on greater urgency over the summer months, when more than eighteen million of the twenty-two million children who rely on free or reduced-price meals at school lose access to those meals. In 2018, Feeding America's network of food banks served nearly twenty-four million meals through summer programs from June through August.
