The grant will fund physical improvements and the addition of a new security system at Southwestern Classical Academy in time for the start of the 2018-19 school year. Renovations will include painting; the rebuilding of student and staff restroom facilities; the updating of lighting, plumbing, and flooring; the repainting and resealing of the gym floor; and a remodeling of the school courtyard. In recent years, the foundation's focus on improving education in Flint has included support for increased access to high-quality early childhood education; efforts to provide student support systems across the district; and YouthQuest, a comprehensive afterschool and summer program.
"At Flint Community Schools, providing a safe and welcoming learning environment is critical to the education of our students," said interim district superintendent Gregory Weatherspoon. "The upgrades slated to take place — made possible by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation — are sure to be celebrated by students, teachers, and staff alike....The fact remains — there is still more work to be done to improve facilities districtwide....In the meantime, these changes will go a long way in bettering the environment at Southwestern Classical Academy."
