Omidyar Network has announced a $2.9 million investment in a new alliance focused on supporting the development and promotion of civic technology platforms in Latin America.
Launched in partnership with Fundación Avina and Avina Americas, the $3.5 million Latin American Alliance for Civic Technology will invest in innovative civic tech platforms and scalable technologies with the potential to deliver significant impact in promoting civic engagement in the region. In its initial funding round, ALTEC will support the implementation of more than twenty projects at civic organizations, independent media outlets, and technology startups with grants of up to $150,000 and technical assistance.
ALTEC is the latest iteration of the Accelerator Fund for Civic Innovation, which was created by Avina and Omidyar Network in 2013 and has been credited with kickstarting the civic tech sector in Latin America. Since its inception, the fund has invested $2.3 million in the development and promotion of twenty-six platforms and apps in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay.
"Civic technology provides a great opportunity to make governments more transparent and more responsive to the true needs of citizens, and for citizens to participate actively in the decisions that impact their everyday lives," said Felipe Estefan, Omidyar Network's investment principal responsible for governance and citizen engagement investments for Latin America. "ALTEC will be the leading power behind the development of Latin America's civic technology ecosystem, providing support and resources to the most innovative solutions for the issues facing citizens and governments across the region."
