The Pacific Life Foundation, the philanthropic arm of insurance giant Pacific Life, has announced grants totaling $2.75 million to nearly two hundred nonprofit organizations in Southern California as part of a $5.5 million commitment to grantmaking in 2011.
The foundation will provide support to organizations working in each of its four main program areas — arts and culture; civic involvement, community, and the environment; education; and health and human services. Grantees include the Illumination Foundation, which will receive $150,000 to help break the cycle of homelessness for destitute families in Orange County; South Coast Repertory, which was awarded $20,000 for its Theatre for Young Audiences program; and the MIND Research Institute, which will receive $100,000 as part of a multiyear, $500,000 commitment to support its Orange County Math Initiative program. An additional $290,000 will be allocated to match Pacific Life employee donations to United Ways in Southern California.
In addition to the funds for Southern California organizations, the foundation announced that it will donate $100,000 to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund and will award $550,000 in 2011 for marine mammal protection and education programs.
