Washington, D.C.-based Independent Sector has named Mauricio Vivero director of government relations. In that position, Vivero will be responsible for developing the organization's grassroots and lobbying strategy on public policy issues. Vivero has served as vice president and director of government relations at the Legal Services Corporation since 1998 and before that served with the American Bar Association and the National Council of La Raza.
The Greater Kansas City Community Foundation has named five local business leaders to its board of directors and has reappointed its current officers for another term. The new directors are William S. Berkley, president and CEO of Tension Envelope Corporation; E. Frank Ellis; chairman of the board and CEO of Swope Community Enterprises; Mark A. Ernst, chairman of the board, president, and CEO of H&R Block, Inc.; G. David Gale, president of Gale Communities, Inc.; and Donald J. Hall Jr., president and CEO of Hallmark Cards, Inc.
In other news, the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., has named Karen E. Avery as director of foundation relations. In that role, Avery will be responsible for the development and implementation of a plan for increasing support from the foundation community for Smithsonian programs. Avery comes to the Smithsonian from Harvard University, where she was assistant dean of Harvard College and director of the school's Ann Radcliffe Trust.
