The Health Foundation for Western and Central New York has named NORA OBRIEN-SURIC as its new president. OBrien-Suric, a senior program officer at the John A. Hartford Foundation, will succeed ANN F. MONROE, who retired at the end of 2016 after thirteen years as president of the foundation. As a senior program officer at the Hartford Foundation, OBrien-Suric developed programs to improve care for older adults across the country and developed a multi-million dollar grant that created the National Aging and Disability Business Center, a multi-site national initiative that provides training for and assistance to community-based providers interested in partnering with health care organizations. Earlier, she served as director of aging programs and new initiatives at the Brookdale Foundation Group; as director of partnerships and special projects at the International Longevity Center; as a coordinator for the Partnership for Eldercare in the New York City Department of Aging; and as an elder law and entitlement specialist at the Brookdale Center on Aging Institute on Law and Rights of Older Adults.
The John A. Hartford Foundation in New York City has announced the hiring of GEORGE SUTTLES as a program officer. Before joining the foundation, Suttles served as a senior philanthropic relationship manager in the Philanthropic Solutions division of U.S. Trust; a program manager at the Anthem Foundation; and a program officer at the New York State Health Foundation. He also serves on the nonprofit boards of Odyssey House, the Support Center, and the Storefront Academy, and volunteers in various capacities with several other organizations in New York City.
The Minneapolis-based GHR Foundation has announced the addition of MANISHA BHARTI and JASON MATZ to its senior leadership team. As chief of strategy and programs, Bharti will oversee the evolution and implementation of the foundation’s overall strategy and lead efforts to track, analyze, and measure results and knowledge emerging from GHR's grantmaking and partnerships. She previously served as chief strategy officer at FHI 360, a leading global development organization based in Washington, D.C., and prior to that served several foundations, including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Children's Investment Fund Foundation, and the Francois-Xavier Bagnoud Foundation. As chief investment officer, Matz will oversee the foundation’s investment portfolio. Named an endowment manager of the year in 2015 by Institutional Investor magazine, he previously served as chief investment officer at Carleton College; as director of global equity research at investment consulting firm Jeffrey Slocum & Associates, Inc.; and as an investment analyst at the Minnesota State Board of Investment.
The Duke Endowment in Charlotte, North Carolina, has announced the promotion of TAMIKA D. WILLIAMS to the position of associate director of its Child Care program area. Williams joined the endowment in 2011 as a program officer after working professionally as a master’s-level social worker for thirteen years, including stints at the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Division of Social Services in Raleigh, and at the Durham County Department of Social Services in Durham From 2009 to 2011, she served as associate director of the National Resource Center for Recruitment and Retention of Foster and Adoptive Parents at AdoptUSKids, a federally funded project.
The Anchorage-based Rasmuson Foundation has announced the election of REBECCA BRICE HENDERSON to its board of directors. A lifelong Alaskan, Henderson is the owner of Santa's Vagabond Travel and serves as president of the Pacific Northwest Board of the American Society of Travel Agents.
Habitat for Humanity International has announced the promotion of COLLEEN FINN RIDENHOUR to the position of senior vice president of development. In that role, Ridenhour, who joined the organization in February 2013 as deputy director of corporate, foundation and institutional relations, will manage the organization's fundraising strategy and process, individual and planned giving, corporate and foundation relations, direct and cause-related marketing, and global campaigns, and will serve as a member of Habitat’s senior management team.
The Skin Cancer Foundation has announced the appointment of BILL RIDENOUR to the position of senior director of partnership development. In that role, Ridenour will be responsible for cultivating the foundation’s corporate partnerships by building on existing relationships and developing new ones. Prior to his appointment, Ridenour served as vice president and publisher for Serendipity magazine, where he oversaw both print and digital advertising sales, and spent more than twenty years in various sales and management positions at Time Inc.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City has announced the appointment of KENNETH WEINE to the position of chief communications officer. Weine, who has served as vice president, communications and marketing for the New York Public Library since 2013, trained as an attorney and began his career as a staff attorney at the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law. From 1999 to 2005, he led communications and marketing at Newsweek and then spent seven years at Consumer Reports/Consumers Union, directing its communications and branding efforts.
In other news, the St. George's Society of New York, a membership organization that provides assistance to people of British and Commonwealth heritage in New York who are in need of financial and emotional support, has announced that KAREN KARPOWICH has resigned from her role as CEO to work on a new environmental arts initiative. Karpowich, whose last day in the office will be January 18, will be replaced in that role by ANNA TITLEY.
