The Russell Sage Foundation has announced the appointment of SHELDON H. DANZIGER as president, effective September 1. Danziger, a nationally recognized expert on the effects of economic, demographic, and public policy changes on trends in poverty and economic inequality, currently is the Meyer Distinguished University Professor of Public Policy at the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy at the University of Michigan, director of the National Poverty Center, and director of the Research and Training Program on Poverty and Public Policy. He is, in addition, a long-time contributor to research projects sponsored by the foundation. He will succeed ERIC WANNER, who has led the foundation since 1986.
The Boston Foundation has announced the appointments of JAMIE JAFFEE as managing partner of The Philanthropic Initiative, one of its operating units, effective February 4. Jaffee, founding president of philanthropic advisory firm Jaffee Enterprises, was the first president of the Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund and later worked for the Bridgespan Group. She succeeds ELLEN REMMER, who announced last year that she would refocus on working more directly with TPI clients. The foundation also announced the appointment of TRAVIS McCREADY as vice president for program. McCready, previously chief of staff to foundation president Paul Grogan, earlier served as director of community affairs at Harvard University, was the first executive director of the Kendall Square Association, and was COO and CFO of the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority. He succeeds ROBERT LEWIS, JR., who is stepping down to establish a nonprofit initiative dedicated to improving the lives of Boston youth. Lewis will continue to serve as a special adviser to the foundation in the first half of 2013.
The Bridgespan Group has announced the appointment of PAUL CARTTAR as a senior partner in its New York City office. CARTTAR, a leader in philanthropy, academia, government, and business, most recently served as the first director of the Obama administration's Social Innovation Fund. He is, in addition, a co-founder of Bridgespan and worked for Bain & Company, which incubated Bridgespan. "We are thrilled that Paul will be rejoining us," said Jeff Bradach, Bridgespan's managing partner and other co-founder. "Paul provided thought leadership and many ideas that continue to animate our work today and that contributed greatly to building Bridgespan's reputation for impact and excellence."
The Saint Luke's Foundation has announced the appointment of CHRISTIE MANNING as senior program officer in its Resilient Families area. Manning, most recently director of programs for Family Connections of Northeast Ohio, earlier held operations and management positions at the Greater Cleveland Family Support Consortium, KidsHealth 2020, IMetroHealth Center for Community Health, Case Western Reserve University, and the YWCA of Greater Cleveland.
The California Wellness Foundation has announced the appointments of BARBARA C. STAGGERS as board chair and EUGENE WASHINGTON as vice chair. Staggers, executive director of external affairs and community relations at Children's Hospital & Research Center Oakland and an authority on urban and minority youth, violence, and healthcare issues, has served on the foundation's board since 2004.
The Smithsonian Institution has announced the appointment of KIM SAJET (pronounced SAY-et) as director of the National Portrait Gallery, effective April 1. Most recently president and CEO of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, Sajet earlier served as senior vice president and deputy director of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, as director of corporate relations at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and was a curator for and then director of two Australian art museums.
In other news, the Imagination Foundation has announced the appointment of MIKE McGALLIARD as executive director. McGalliard began his career as an English teacher and later launched and led successful startups in the education sector, including LA's Promise (aka MLA Partner Schools).
