People in the News (4/15/18): Appointments, Promotions, Obituaries

The San Francisco-based Bravo Family Foundation has announced the appointment of GUIOMAR GARCIA-GUERRA as executive director. In that role, Garcia-Guerra will begin building a long-term plan for the foundation's permanent mission in Puerto Rico. A native of Puerto Rico, García-Guerra has a proven track record of increasing strategic philanthropic investments for nonprofit, educational, and environmental causes on the island. Prior to joining BFF, she served as the founding executive director of the Flamboyan Foundation and held various executive positions and consulting roles in Puerto Rico, Massachusetts and New York, where she led the Ventures in Leadership Fund at the Wallace Foundation.

The Laura and John Arnold Foundation  has named JEFF COHEN as its executive vice president of communications. In that role, Cohen will oversee LJAF’s strategic communications initiatives in a wide range of issue areas and will lead a communications team focused on media relations, digital communications, positioning, and national outreach. He joins the foundation after a more than forty-year career with Hearst Newspapers, including stints as the top editor of the Houston Chronicle and the Times Union in Albany, New York. Cohen also was named the National Press Foundation’s “Ben Bradlee Editor of the Year” in 2008, served as a Pulitzer Prize juror six times, and has won numerous awards for writing and design. Cohen will be based at the foundation’s headquarters in Houston, his hometown.

The Rockefeller Brothers Fund in New York City has announced that it will be welcoming SALLY DONNELLY as a non-resident senior fellow. In that role, Donnelly will support the fund’s international work by monitoring and interpreting developments in the national security community, strengthening relationships with key influencers in the U.S. and abroad, and examining policy proposals focused on managing global challenges and the prevention and resolution of conflict. Donnelly started her career as a journalist with TIME, where she worked for more than twenty years, reporting on foreign affairs and national security issues, including the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. In 2013, she established her own strategic consulting firm, and in 2016 she returned to the Pentagon as senior advisor to Secretary of Defense James N. Mattis, a post she left in March.

The Philadelphia-based Barnes Foundation has appointed NANCY IRESON as its new chief curator and deputy director for collections and exhibitions, effective in August. Ireson has more than fifteen years of experience at some of the world’s top arts institutions, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Morgan Library and Museum in New York City, and the Courtauld Gallery in London, and joins the Barnes from the Tate Modern in London, where she has served as curator of international art since 2015.

At its 2018 annual meeting on March 27, the Nonprofit Coordinating Committee of New York (NPCC) elected seven new members to its board of directors. Joining the board are CHARLES A. ARCHER (The THRIVE Network), CAMMIE ERICKSON (LinkedIn), MICHELLE HENRY (JPMorgan Chase & Company), PHILIP LI (Robert Sterling Clark Foundation), JARRETT LUCAS (The Stonewall Foundation), KAMESH MOOLA (Barclays), and BOBBY TRAN (Google).

The organization also re-elected six board members: ROBERT ACTON (Cause Strategy Partners), DIANA DAVENPORT (Commonwealth Fund), RICHARD SOUTO (LeAp), STEPHANIE THOMAS (Stetwin Consulting), EILEEN TORRES (BronxWorks), and JO-ANN YOO (Asian American Federation). 

The National Philanthropic Trust, the largest independent donor-advised fund sponsor and one of the twenty-five largest grantmaking institutions in the U.S., has announced the appointment of ANN DUGAN, STEPHEN HOPKINS, and KELLY WILLIAMS to its board. Dugan is senior managing director at Family Office Exchange and leads that organization’s advisory and educational efforts. Prior to that, the founded and led the Institute for Entrepreneurial Excellence at the University of Pittsburgh for nearly thirty years, while also serving as assistant dean for the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business. Hopkins, a partner and senior client advisor at investment and wealth management firm Ballentine and Partners, has more than thirty years of leadership and hands-on experience in global asset management. Williams, senior advisor at GCM Grosvenor, founded the Customized Fund Investment Group in 1999, which specialized in private equity, real estate, and infrastructure investing, and is founding chair and CEO of the Private Equity Women Investor Network.

The Billie Jean King Leadership Initiative (BJKLI) has announced that SERENA and VENUS WILLIAMS have joined the nonprofit’s advisory board. BJKLI was founded in 2014 by Billie Jean King, her partner Ilana Kloss, and the global CEO advisory firm Teneo in an effort to promote equality and inclusion in the workplace. In addition to their success on the tennis court, the Williams sisters are strong advocates for equal prize money in the sport. In 2016, the sisters teamed up to establish the Williams Sisters Fund, which supports various philanthropic efforts.

African Parks, a nonprofit conservation organization, has announced that JOHN E. SCANLON has joined the organization as special envoy, a newly created position. Previously, Scanlon served as secretary-general of the Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) from 2010 to 2018, leading that organization’s efforts to combat the illegal wildlife trade. Under his leadership the number of parties to CITES grew, and he oversaw two of its most successful conferences, in Bangkok in 2013 and in Johannesburg in 2016.
