People in the News (5/14/17): Appointments, Promotions, Obituaries

Lumina Foundation has named BRAD KELSHEIMER, DePauw University's senior vice president for finance and administration, as chief financial officer, effective June 19. Kelsheimer will replace longtime Lumina CFO J. DAVID MAAS, who is retiring after seventeen years leading the finance operations of Lumina, which has a $1.1 billion endowment. Prior to joining DePauw, Kelsheimer worked for nine years at Rose-Hulman, rising to the position of associate vice president for financial affairs. He started his career in 1990 with Price Waterhouse in Indianapolis as a staff/senior auditor, before serving in several roles with General Housewares Corp. in Terre Haute from 1995 through 2000.

The Obama Foundation has announced that LYNN TALIENTO, a consultant who has been advising former President Barack Obama on his post-presidential life, has joined the foundation in the newly created position of chief program officer. In that role, Taliento will lead a team tasked with developing programs that give people in Chicago and around the world the tools they need to address challenges in their own communities. Sweet most recently was the leader of the global philanthropy practice at McKinsey & Company, where she founded the firm's first practice area dedicated to the nonprofit sector almost twenty years ago. She also led McKinsey's research on the nonprofit sector, including its report And the Winner Is… on how to design prizes that work. Sweet is a founding board member of Malala Yousafzai's organization, the Malala Fund, which advocates for girls’ secondary education around the world, and  is also board chair of, a nonprofit founded by Gary White and Matt Damon that has pioneered the WaterCredit approach to making water and sanitation solutions affordable for all.

The William G. and Marie Selby Foundation in Sarasota, Florida, has named CAROL BUTERA as its new executive director, effective as of mid-July. Butera, who will succeed SARAH PAPPAS in that role, brings has more than twenty years of leadership experience in foundation, nonprofit, and educational organization and most recently served as vice president of Children First. Since 1955, the foundation has awarded more than $120 million in grants to nonprofits in Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte and DeSoto counties and provided scholarships to more than five thousand undergraduate students. 

The Gifford Foundation in Syracuse, New York, has announced the election of MEG TIDD to its board of trustees. A graduate of the University of Rochester’s Simon Business School, Tidd is chief marketing officer for VIP Structures, a 2014 graduate of Leadership Greater Syracuse, and a member of the Society of Marketing Professional Services (Upstate Chapter). In 2016, she was recognized as a Central New York Business Journal 40 Under Forty honoree.

The board of directors of the CDC Foundation has announced the election of DAVID ALDRIDGE to the board. Aldridge, the former chief financial officer and executive vice president for Superior Essex, Inc., a $2.5 billion global wire and cable manufacturing company, has served as an advisor to the CDC Foundation's finance committee for the last two years and now serves as committee chair. He previously served on the board of trustees of Holy Innocents Episcopal School and is on the board of trustees of Canterbury Court, an Episcopal-sponsored senior-living facility.

In other news, the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation, a breast cancer research organization in Encino, California, has announced that VANESSA SCHNAIDT, group account director at Hershey Cause Communications, has joined its board of directors. Prior to joining Hershey Cause, Schnaidt served as director of communications at Foundation Center, where she oversaw the development and implementation of internal and external communications strategies.
