Phil Henderson to Step Down as Surdna Foundation President

The New York City-based Surdna Foundation has announced that Phillip Henderson will step down as president to "pursue a new professional path."

Henderson, only the foundation's second president, joined Surdna in 2007 and spearheaded an effort to update its mission and programs, with a focus on fostering sustainable communities guided by principles of social justice. During his tenure, the foundation also made one of its largest grants, an award of $4.5 million to strengthen community voices; allocated $100 million to impact investments; contributed in significant ways to the field of family philanthropy; and published numerous reports in which it shared its learnings in the areas of social justice, multi-generational family foundation board engagement, and impact investing. The board will launch a national search in early 2018 for Henderson's successor.

Before being appointed president of the foundation, Henderson served as vice president of the German Marshall Fund of the United States, which he joined in 1988 as a program officer. He currently serves as chair of the Romanian American Foundation and on the boards of BoardSource, Living Cities, the Center for Civic Engagement at Bard College, and International House.

"On behalf of the board of directors, I wish to thank Phil for his extraordinary service," Surdna Foundation board chair Peter Benedict II said in a statement. "We have been blessed by his leadership and are thankful for his contributions to the field of social justice and family philanthropy. We wish him the very best as he pursues the next opportunity in his professional career and we look forward to working together until his successor is named. Finally, we look forward to building upon his strong track record as we enter our second century."

"Over my time here, I have had the privilege of serving alongside colleagues who have helped me learn more deeply about social justice and equity, who have introduced me to amazing leaders and their innovative ideas, and who have helped me grow as a leader throughout these past ten years," said Henderson. "As I move on from Surdna, I look forward to continuing to help make positive social change in the world.  I'm excited about the possibilities before me and to see the great work of Surdna continue under new leadership."
