Saint Louis University Receives $8.4 Million for Nursing School

Saint Louis University has announced an $8.4 million bequest to its School of Nursing from the estate of alumna Mary K. Hoppe.

The largest gift of any kind in the nursing school's history will  create the Dr. and Mrs. Robert C. Hoppe Endowed Scholarship and support students in the school's bachelor's, master's, post-master's nurse practitioner certificate, and doctoral programs.

Mary K. and Robert C. Hoppe  graduated from the School of Nursing and the School of Medicine, respectively, in 1951, married, and returned to Houston, their hometown. After her husband died in 2002, Mary  Hoppe moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, to live with her niece. She died in July 2017.

"The endowed scholarship has been designated as a financial need-based scholarship, and I can envision how this award will help many students complete the nursing education program with little to no educational debt," said Teri Murray, dean of the School of Nursing. "The Hoppes' generosity in providing educational assistance for students will live eternally through the lives of the scholarship recipients and the countless numbers of patients each student touches."
