The New York City-based Shubert Foundation has announced grants totaling $32 million to five-hundred and sixty nonprofit performing arts organizations across the country.
General operating support grants ranging from $10,000 to $325,000 were awarded to nonprofit theaters and dance companies, professional theater training programs, and related service agencies, with a particular focus on professional resident theater and dance companies developing and producing new American works. Grants recipients include the Center Theatre Group ($200,000) in Los Angeles; Berkeley Repertory Theatre ($225,000) in California; Center Stage ($195,000 ) in Baltimore; PlayMakers Repertory Company ($85,000) in Chapel Hill, North Carolina; Two River Theater Company ($125,000) in Red Bank, New Jersey; and the Brooklyn Academy of Music ($250,000).
"The awards this year represent a record number of grants," said Shubert Foundation president Diana Phillips. "COVID-19 has had a devastating impact on the field, creating the greatest need in the history of the foundation. We hope that the general operating support the foundation provides will be particularly meaningful at this uniquely difficult time."
