Through the initiative, ANA is working to improve the health of America's 3.6 million registered nurses. Launched in May 2017, the initiative provides a framework designed to encourage individual nurses, employers of nurses, state nurses' associations, and specialty nurses' associations to take action, with a focus on five areas: physical activity, rest, nutrition, quality of life, and safety.
Organizations and individual ANA members participating in the initiative have access to a Web platform where they can opt into a variety of challenges related to the five areas. As a new partner, Sodexo will add its programs and expertise to quality of life and nutrition areas and will collaborate with ANA to develop new program activities.
According to ANA, nurses tend to be less healthy than the average American. Research shows that nurses experience 2.8 times more stress, have a 30 percent less nutritious diet and a 5 percent higher body mass index, and get 10 percent less sleep.
"The ANA Enterprise is grateful for Sodexo's support of Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation," said ANA Enterprise interim CEO Debbie Hatmaker. "We are proud to partner with a company that shares our goal of improving nurses' quality of life and nutrition as part of a comprehensive approach to wellness."
