The Athens-based Stavros Niarchos Foundation has announced grants totaling $10.9 million (€8.2 million) to twenty-one organizations working to ease the effects of the ongoing socioeconomic crisis in Greece.
The grants bring to $69 million the total awarded by the foundation through a €100 million initiative to address mounting social needs in the economically stressed country. In the latest funding cycle, grants were awarded to organizations working in the areas of social welfare, health and medicine, education, and the arts.
Recipients include the child protection centers of Irakleio and Lasithi, which each received a grant to employ a part-time psychologist over two years; the Social Support Center of Kilkis, which was awarded a grant to mount a reconstruction project; the Elementary School of Ampelakia, which received a grant to support five new air conditioners and related repair work; and the Neos Kosmos Theater, which received a grant to implement several theatrical performances for children in hospitals and other institutions.
