Teagle Foundation Awards $1.2 Million for Liberal Arts Initiatives

The New York City-based Teagle Foundation has announced grants totaling nearly $1.3 million in support of liberal arts programs nationwide.

The grants were awarded through two recently launched initiatives — Pathways to the Liberal Arts, which seeks to boost access to and success in the liberal arts for students from disadvantaged backgrounds, and Education for American Civic Life, which is focused on increasing undergraduates' knowledge of American democracy and encouraging civil discourse.

The awards include $450,000 over three years to San Francisco State University, California State University-Los Angeles, California State University-Chico, San Diego State University, California State Polytechnic University-Pomona, and Sonoma State University in support of a student-centered approach to a more cohesive and coordinated curriculum redesign within the California State University System; $245,000 over three years to Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin, to provide intensive college-level humanities classes to low-income high school students; $275,000 over there years to Hostos Community College, Borough of Manhattan Community College, LaGuardia Community College, and New York City College of Technology to embed classic works of literature and philosophy in English composition and other required courses; and $325,000 over three years to Brandeis University to expand the Educational Network for Active Civic Transformation, a national network of institutions that employ a series of courses that combine traditional reading assignments with direct experience in the state legislative process in order to provide students with a general understanding of how government works at the state level.
