Underground Railroad Freedom Center Receives $1 Million Gift

The Federated Department Stores Foundation has announced a $1 million gift to the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. The gift will be used to support the center's capital campaign and its recently launched Web site.

"Education is a cornerstone of Federated's corporate philanthropy programming, as well as our commitment to the community," commented Federated chairman and CEO Jim Zimmerman. "Both our foundation's funds and our employees' time are widely given in support of America's youth, and we see our leadership gift to the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center as an extension of that involvement."

Federated joins a group of companies and foundations from around the country that have provided financial support to the center, which will highlight the true stories of courage and cooperation that marked the history of the Undergroud Railroad and is scheduled to open in Cincinnati in 2004. The Federated gift brings the total raised to $62 million.

Federated Department Stores, with corporate offices in Cincinnati and New York, currently operates more than 400 department stores in 33 states and Puerto Rico under the Bloomingdale's, Bon Marche, Burdines, Goldsmith's, Lazarus, Macy's, Rich's, and Stern's names.
