University of San Francisco Receives $15 Million for Athletics Center

The University of San Francisco has announced a $15 million gift from Silicon Valley philanthropists John A. Sobrato and his wife, Susan, to help renovate its War Memorial Gymnasium.

The largest gift from an individual or individuals in the school’s history will help create a state-of-the-art athletics facility and multi-use center that includes a campus-facing entrance welcoming students, alumni, and the community. The Sobrato Center — the core of a comprehensive athletics facilities master plan designed to enhance recruitment of elite-level athletes who excel in the classroom and are good citizens — will include expanded weight and training facilities and premium seating and hospitality areas in a new John A. and Sue Sobrato Club Level.

"We are deeply grateful to John and Sue for their remarkable generosity and philanthropic leadership," said the university's president, Rev. Paul J. Fitzgerald. "Their commitment to giving back, to Jesuit education, and to building community has set a new standard not just here at USF but far beyond."
