Urban Institute Launches Housing Research Initiative

The Urban Institute has announced the launch of a research effort aimed at exploring how housing affects people's lives and the prosperity of the communities in which they live.

Building on years of research — research which demonstrates that stable, affordable housing creates ripple effects that lead to improvements in health and educational outcomes and children's well-being — the Housing Matters initiative will work to foster partnerships that can address the country's affordable housing crisis. To that end, and with support from the Kresge Foundation, the initiative will work to lift evidence about why traditionally fragmented sectors should collaborate more to ensure a more equitable housing market that allows everyone to thrive.

In conjunction with the launch, Urban also announced a refresh of the Housing Matters website, which offers research, tools, and stories highlighting the intersection between housing and a range of social and economic indicators and will serve as a hub for information that demonstrates the role of stable housing in creating more equitable, inclusive communities.

"Our hope is that our online resources, as well as the strategic and technical advice Urban researchers and policy experts provide, can help changemakers across different sectors strengthen their alliances," said Maya Brennan and Mary K. Cunningham in a blog post. "And we hope that ultimately, we can work together to scale effective, integrated solutions to housing instability. Because home matters for everyone."
