Waltons Transfer Shares Worth $48 Billion to Family Trust

The heirs to the Walmart fortune have donated Walmart shares worth an estimated $48 billion to their family trust, Bloomberg reports.

According to regulatory filings last week, Walton Enterprises LLC, the Walton family's main investment entity, transferred 415 million shares, or about 15 percent of Walmart's outstanding shares, to the Walton Family Holdings Trust. The family — whose combined fortune the Bloomberg Billionaires Index estimates at more than $185 billion — owns about half the retailer's outstanding shares.

Although, according to Bloomberg, the trust has in the past sold most of the shares transferred to it to fund charitable contributions while increasing its ownership percentage, the family said in a statement last week that "[t]here is no set timetable for the sale of shares from the trust."
