Western Union Foundation Renews Support for Refugee Initiative

The Denver-based Western Union Foundation has announced a new three-year commitment to the Whitaker Peace and Development Initiative (WPDI) to assist youth from war-torn regions of Uganda and South Sudan.

In 2016, the foundation supported a program that provided WPDI's Youth Peacemaker Network with a community learning center, access to life-skills, conflict-resolution education, and vocational training for more than ten thousand refugees and internationally displaced individuals at a refugee settlement in Kiryandongo, Uganda. The new commitment boosts the foundation's total investment in the initiative to $2 million.

According to the United Nations Refugee Agency, there was a 44 percent increase in Uganda's refugee population in 2017, and the region now hosts nearly one-third of the world's refugee population.
