Educational Opportunities for Children and Families

Educational Opportunities for Children and Families
Founded: 1967

Mission: To assist and strengthen families and children in Southwest Washington by connecting them to resources and support services.

About the Organization: Founded in 1967 as the Economic Opportunity Committee of Clark County (WA) to administer War on Poverty programs, Educational Opportunities for Children and Families connects low-income families and children in Southwest Washington to resources and support services at no cost. With the goal of preparing children for kindergarten, empowering families, and strengthening community, the organization also promotes high-quality, developmentally appropriate best practices that focus on the whole child.

Current Programs: EOCF’s programs for children from birth through age five are designed to support family well-being, positive parent-child relationships, parents as their children's first teachers, and families as community leaders and advocates. The organization's Head Start, Early Head Start, and Early Childhood Education and Assistance programs work with families to nurture a child's cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development — with the help of nutritious meals, health screenings, dental care, and classes on parenting and child development, health and nutrition, leadership and advocacy, and financial education. EOCF also sponsors the HotShots Youth Sports basketball program for children in grades one through six.

Website: Visitors to the EOCF site can learn about the organization's programs for infants and toddlers, preschool-age children, and children with disabilities (including home-based services); program eligibility requirements; and the application process. The website also provides a list of community and agency resources for families. Visitors to the site also can support EOCF with a donation of cash, classroom supplies, facilities, etc.; through a corporate and community partnership; or by volunteering.

Funding: Educational Opportunities for Children and Families is funded by federal and state grants and individuals.
