Mission: To improve the health and well-being of men, women, and children living with HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other life-altering illnesses by alleviating hunger and malnutrition.
About the Organization: People affected by serious illness often are vulnerable to malnutrition, hunger, and isolation. A nonsectarian organization based in New York City, God's Love We Deliver prepares and delivers nutritious, high-quality meals to people who, because of their illness, are unable to provide or prepare meals for themselves. The organization also provides illness-specific nutrition education and counseling to its clients, many of whom subsisted on a low income before becoming sick. With the commitment of 114 staff members and 16,500 volunteers, the organization today prepares and home-delivers over two million meals annually to more than eight thousand individuals in the New York City metro area, including the city's five boroughs Westchester and Nassau counties, and Hudson County, New Jersey. All of its services are provided free of charge.
Current Programs: The organization's Home-Delivered Meal Program works with clients' healthcare providers to confirm their medical eligibility. Once a client has been enrolled, s/he typically receives up to ten meals a week. Upon enrollment, a God's Love We Deliver dietitian speaks with new clients to determine their nutrition needs, food restrictions, treatment regimens, ability to chew and swallow, and any other information that can help the organization design a meal plan that is medically appropriate for the client. Meals, which include renal, vegetarian, soft, pureed, and other options, are prepared in the organization's commercial kitchen in lower Manhattan by a staff of professional chefs with the help of more than sixteen thousand volunteers annually.
COVID-19 Response: God's Love We Deliver clients are at the greatest risk from the coronavirus, many being elderly and all living with underlying conditions and severe illness that make them especially susceptible to COVID-19. Indeed, the organization has received more than two thousand new applications for service in the months since COVID-19 was declared a pandemic. With support from the organization's friends in the fashion and home decor and goods industries, it has continued to serve clients across the metro region. Donors that have stepped up their support for the organization include board member Aerin Lauder, artisan milliner Gigi Burris, estate and period jewelry dealers Kentshire, and menswear company Yuasa. According to the organization, a donation of $100 funds a week of meals for a client living with serious illness.
Funding: God's Love We Deliver is supported by individuals, corporations, and foundations.
