Mission: To support the artistic and social empowerment of disadvantaged immigrant communities through innovative work in the performance arts.
About the Organization: Founded in 2001, ID Studio Theater NYC works to provide immigrant communities with culturally innovative ways to express and address the obstacles faced by newly arrived immigrants and low-income families. To that end, the company promotes performance arts as a vehicle for building community, raising awareness, and creating a safe space for such exploration; engages in collective action and inter-community dialogue with community leaders; and encourages social transformation through the performance arts around issues such as immigration, health, education, and youth development. The organization also works within the poorest Latino immigrant communities to develop new audiences, create new works, and train new artists.
Current Programs: ID Studio Theater's current projects include a multiyear collaboration with DreamYard Project, a Bronx-based arts education organization, and the Théâtre du Bout du Monde in Nanterre, France, on a theater exchange program for teenagers; and, in collaboration with the Teatro Naciónal de Colombia and traditionally marginalized indigenous and Afro-Colombian communities in Colombia, the musical Risaralda. Recent projects include a production of Trilogy for Juan Rulfo, which was developed over six years in collaboration with members of the Mexican immigrant community on Staten Island.
In addition, the organization is in the process of renovating a three-story house located next door to BronxArtSpace that will house a community space, a rehearsal studio for the development of new work, offices, and two studio apartments for affiliated and visiting artists.
