Kids in Need of Defense

Kids in Need of Defense
Founded: 2008

Mission:
To provide protection for unaccompanied children who enter the U.S. immigration system alone and ensure that no child appears in immigration court without representation.

About the Organization:
Founded in 2008 by actress and philanthropist Angelina Jolie and Microsoft Corporation, Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) aims to mobilize a pro bono movement of law firms, corporations, nongovernmental organizations, universities, and volunteers to provide high-quality and compassionate legal counsel to unaccompanied refugee and immigrant children. The organization provides legal services, works to ensure that children who are ineligible to remain in the U.S. are returned to their communities safely and securely, and advocates for changes in U.S. immigration law, policy, and practice.

Current Programs:
With offices in Baltimore, Boston, Houston, Newark, New York City, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Washington, D.C., KIND trains pro bono attorneys to represent child clients referred to the organization in their immigration proceedings and provides comprehensive mentorship throughout the process until the case is closed.

The Guatemalan Child Return and Reintegration Project is a pilot project developed in partnership with the Global Fund for Children to ensure the safe return of unaccompanied Guatemalan children and provide support and access to vital services upon their arrival in Guatemala.

KIND's advocacy activities focus on ensuring that legislation in Congress addresses the needs of unaccompanied children and improves their protection, and working with federal agencies — the Department of Homeland Security and its agencies as well as the Departments of State and Health and Human Services — to ensure that policy, practice, and procedure reflect the protections unaccompanied children are granted under U.S. law.
