National Breast Cancer Foundation

National Breast Cancer Foundation
Founded: 1991

Mission: To provide help and inspire hope to those affected by breast cancer through early detection, education, and support services.

About the Organization: Founded in 1991 by breast cancer survivor Janelle Hail, the National Breast Cancer Foundation works to raise awareness of the disease — one in eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with it — and the importance of early diagnosis. To that end, NBCF promotes breast health education, provides women in need with access to free mammograms, and supports breast cancer patients and survivors.

Current Programs: NBCF's programs include Breast Health Awareness, which provides educational materials, in-person training sessions, and online training modules, and the Early Detection Plan, which offers information about as well as an app for scheduling routine self-exams, clinical exams, and mammograms. The organization also partners with medical facilities across the country to offer free mammograms and diagnostic breast care services to underserved women through its National Mammography Program and helps them overcome barriers presented by cost, fear, and misinformation through its Patient Navigator Program.

For women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, NBCF offers Beyond the Shock, an online resource designed to help patients and loved ones gain a better understanding of the disease and make it easier for doctors to share information with their patients. In addition, the organization's Breast Cancer Research Program funds projects focused on improving the outcome of triple-negative breast cancer and advancements in personalized therapies.

Website: Visitors to the NBCF site can learn more about breast cancer, watch educational videos, search for partner facilities that provide free mammograms and diagnostic services, or download the Early Detection Plan or Beyond the Shock apps. Visitors also can ask and/or answer questions about breast cancer, hear survivors' stories or share their own, sign up to host a fundraising event or campaign, stay current with recent developments via Janelle's and/or the NBCF blogs, or learn more about supporting the organization.

Funding: The National Breast Cancer Foundation is funded by foundations, corporations, and individuals.
