AT&T Foundation

The AT&T Foundation invests globally in projects that are at the intersection of community needs and AT&T's business interests. Emphasis is placed on programs that serve the needs of people in communities where AT&T has a significant business presence, initiatives that use technology in innovative ways, and programs in which AT&T employees are actively involved as contributors or volunteers.

Purpose of Site:
The site provides information on the AT&T Foundation's programs and its grantmaking activities, as well as instructions and guidelines for grantseekers. It also offers information on the foundation's matching gift program for employees and how the foundation can expand employees' volunteer opportunities.

The AT&T Foundation was formed in 1984 to handle AT&T's philanthropic activities. Since its beginning, it has distributed grants totaling more than $700 million, and in 2000 it contributed $43.5 million to more than 1,000 nonprofit organizations. Seventy-five percent of the foundation's funding last year supported local community projects. The AT&T Foundation invests globally in undertakings that address a range of public concerns, and it focuses its support in three main areas: education, civic and community service, and arts and culture.

Home Page:
The home page of the AT&T Foundation Web site offers visitors quick access to nearly every area on the site. A bank of links on the left side of the page offers access to the About Us, Foundation Programs, Employee Involvement, Funding Guidelines, Grant Search, Newsroom, FAQs, and Contact Us portions of the site. The main body of the home page offers gateways to the foundation's main program areas of education, civic and community service, and arts and culture, as well as employee involvement.

The page also includes a scrolling headline bar that features the latest activities and announcements from the foundation, and users can click on a headline to read the entire story. At the bottom of the home page is a Featured Archive button, which allows users to access in-depth articles about the foundation's activities.

Outstanding Feature:
The Grant Search feature on the AT&T Foundation Web site allows users to identify specific organizations that have received funding from the foundation since 1996. Users can search by program area or location with the option of narrowing the search by identifying a particular year. Also, the site provides an alphabetical list of grant recipients during 1996-2001. All of the site's grant information is up to date and clearly presented in easy-to-read charts.

Honorable Mention:
AT&T has a major philanthropic resource in its more than 150,000 employees. The Employee Involvement part of the foundation's Web site provides information on employees' efforts as well as information for those who wish to become involved. AT&T employees have long been active volunteers, with their roots in the Telephone Pioneers of America, a nonprofit organization established in 1911 for employee volunteers from telecommunications companies in North America. Today, more than 60,000 active and retired AT&T employees are involved with the 800,000-member organization.

The Web site offers information on the foundation's efforts to match employee contributions to educational and cultural organizations, including eligibility requirements, the procedures for securing a matching gift, and contact phone numbers for inquiries. In addition to supplementing AT&T employees' charitable contributions, the foundation offers employees and retirees a way to amplify their contributions to their communities through AT&T CARES (AT&T Community Awards Recognizing Employee Service). The program encourages employees to apply for grants for the organizations that they support through volunteering. The AT&T CARES part of the Web site includes an Online Grant Application Form that makes it even easier for employees to become more involved.
