Center for Disaster Philanthropy

Center for Disaster Philanthropy

Mission:  To transform the field of disaster philanthropy by increasing donor effectiveness throughout the life cycle of disasters providing education, funding opportunities, and strategic guidanceā€¦

Background: Formed after Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the Center for Disaster Philanthropy (CDP) is a full-time resource that helps donors make more thoughtful disaster-related giving decisions and maximize the impact of their gifts. With an emphasis on recovery and disaster risk reduction, the center aims to increase the effectiveness of contributions given in response to disasters; bring greater attention to the life cycle of disasters; provide timely and relevant advice from experts with deep knowledge of disaster philanthropy; conduct due diligence so donors can give with confidence; and create plans for informed giving for individuals, corporations, and foundations. The center focuses on disasters in real time, 365 days a year, and supports the full cycle of disaster relief including planning, preparation, mitigation, recovery, and resilience. In addition, CDP produces the annual Measuring the State of Disaster Philanthropy report in conjunction with Foundation Center with support provided by the Irene W. and C.B. Pennington Foundation and the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation.

Outstanding Web Features: The site serves as a one-stop-shop for planning giving around disaster relief. Inside, viewers can find information on how to give to a specific disaster affecting communities globally. Given the recent spate of natural disasters in 2017, prominent links include data on Fund Recovery for the Devastating Atlantic Hurricane Season, Support for Hurricane Harvey Recovery, Donating to the Irma Recovery Fund, Mexico Earthquakes Resources and Updates, and Caribbean Hurricanes: Ways to Help & Resources. For more detailed information viewers can check out the site's disasters module; assess the center's consulting services; review signature projects including last year's Disaster Philanthropy Playbook, which is a compilation of strategies and lessons learned to improve donor effectiveness when calamities occur; access a more detailed list of resources; and read more about disaster relief, filtered by category or author on the site's blog.
