Mission: To connect diverse groups of individuals, communities, and organizations around the world eager to celebrate and encourage giving.
Background: Now in its seventh year, #GivingTuesday was created by the team at the Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact at the 92nd Street Y — a cultural center in New York City that, since 1874, has been bringing people together around the values of service and giving back. Launched by a group of social sector influencers as a philanthropic retort to rampant holiday consumerism and fueled by social media, the campaign has engaged more than fifty thousand organizations worldwide since its inception. The #GivingTuesday portal does not accept or distribute donations; all donations made on #GivingTuesday itself, which this year falls on November 27, are directed to nonprofits through their websites or the sites of partner nonprofits such as Network for Good.
Outstanding Web Features: The #GivingTuesday portal encourages 501(c)(3) organizations in the U.S. with specific #GivingTuesday initiatives to "join the movement" through a simple sign up page. The site also offers a complete toolkit for organizations looking to plan and launch a #GivingTuesday campaign, while visitors to the site can search for #GivingTuesday campaigns by city, state, organization type, or organization name. (International organizations are invited to check out the portal's global page to learn more about #GivingTuesday activities in their home countries.) Individuals interested in participating in #GivingTuesday can access a section of the site dedicated to sharing ideas for giving back, whether through voluntarism, cash donations, and other initiatives, and can also access #GivingTuesday-related news and reports through the site's Giving Lab portal, download #GivingTuesday logos and an #UnSelfie template to use when talking about how and why they are giving, learn more about the movement through the site's blog and an FAQ, and win $10,000 for their favorite nonprofit by entering the #MyGivingStory Contest.
