Mission: To serve as a unique access point to timely, comprehensive migration statistics and reliable information about migration data globally.
Background: The portal was formally announced on July 12, 2016, at the 2nd Berlin Roundtable on Refugees and Migration and was launched in December 2017. It's managed and developed by IOM's Global Migration Data Analysis Centre, with guidance from an advisory board, and was supported pre-launch by the Economist Intelligence Unit. The purpose of the portal is to provide reliable migration data and analyses of the movement of migrants and refugees globally and is designed to help policy makers, national statistics officers, journalists, and the general public navigate the increasingly complex landscape of international migration data.
Outstanding Web Features: The portal is organized into six main sections, making it easy for visitors to find the data and information they're looking for. The Data section features an interactive map of the world that visualizes international, publicly-available, and internationally comparable migration data. Written in collaboration with subject matter experts, the Themes section provides an overview of migration by topic, including types of migration, migration and vulnerability, migration and development, and migration policy. The Tools section offers guidance and recommendations with respect to all stages in the production of migration statistics, from collection and analysis to use and dissemination. The SDGs section allows visitors to spin a "wheel" and explore the migration-relevant SDG indicators and data sources. And the Overviews section offers key migration statistics by country and region, as well as profiles of various countries' migration governance structures according to the Migration Governance Indicators, while the Latest section provides a handy way to find new content on the site and keep up with news about global migration. The site also blog featuring articles and a Talking Migration Data video series.
