Status of Women in the States

To provide data related to the status of women that can be used to raise awareness, improve policies affecting women, and promote gender equality.

A project of the Institute for Women's Policy Research, the Status of Women in the States provides state and national data on a wide range of indicators related to women's well-being — including economic security, education, reproductive rights, political participation, civic engagement, and access to health care and work supports. Developed in partnership with the Ford Foundation, American Federation of Teachers, Women's Funding Network, Women's Funding Alliance, and OWL: The Voice of Women 40+, the project aims to strengthen policy, inspire change, and improve women's lives and well-being.

Outstanding Web Features:
Visitors to the site can explore an interactive map with letter grades, scores, and rankings for each state in each status category — including employment and earnings, poverty and opportunity, work and family, violence and safety, reproductive rights, health and well-being, and political participation. Users also can examine data by population group (e.g., older women, millennials, women of color, immigrant women, and same-sex households). In addition, the raw data is available for download.
