Mission: To provide tools and resources designed to strengthen the financial management of nonprofits and help them become "fiscally fit."
Background: The New York City-based Wallace Foundation launched a project in 2009 to see whether it could help more than two dozen of its Chicago grantees that were operating respected afterschool programs build their financial management capacity. To that end, it contracted Fiscal Management Associates (FMA), a consultancy specializing in financial management for nonprofits, to provide the organizations with tools, training, and one-on-one assistance. The StrongNonprofits toolkit that grew out of that work today offers afterschool nonprofits — and nonprofits in general — a variety of free tools, articles, reports, and resources designed to help them strengthen their financial management. The foundation also created a chart that describes the thinking behind the Chicago initiative, and issued a research report in 2012 that provides detail about the initiatives successes and challenges.
Outstanding Web Features: The StongNonprofits toolkit includes customizable tools, pre-loaded customizable calendars, advice from experts in the field, and self-assessment internal controls checklists and quizzes designed to help nonprofit leaders and program officers take stock of their operations and/or determine where they should focus next. Visitors can explore the toolkit by topic, including budgeting, cash flow, operations, data and analysis, audit readiness, and governance and strategy, Other resources, including guides, charts, templates, and calendars, are available as free downloads.
