Mission: To help business promote gender equality and women's empowerment in the workplace, marketplace, and community.
Background: Established by the UN Global Compact and UN Women, the WEPs are a vehicle for corporations around the globe to deliver on the gender equality dimensions of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Designed to support companies as they review their existing policies and practices — or establish new ones — around women's empowerment, the principles are informed by international labor and human rights standards and are grounded in the recognition that businesses have a stake in, and a responsibility for, gender equality and women’s empowerment. CEOs and directors of private, public, and state-owned companies as well as cooperatives are encouraged to sign a CEO Statement of Support and complete an online application to become a signatory to the principles. All signatories are expected to support efforts to advance gender equality and are encouraged to take steps to monitor and report on their companies' progress.
Outstanding Web Features: The site is built around seven Women's Empowerment Principles: Principle 1 — establish high-level corporate leadership for gender equality; Principle 2 — treat all women and men fairly at work, and respect and support human rights and non-discrimination; Principle 3 — ensure the health, safety, and well-being of all women and men workers; Principle 4 — promote education, training, and professional development for women; Principle 5 — implement enterprise development, supply chain, and marketing practices that empower women; Principle 6 — promote equality through community initiatives and advocacy; and Principle 7 — measure and publicly report on progress to achieve gender equality. Visitors to the site can explore a map that shows all signatories to the principles worldwide, a searchable database of women's empowerment resources, and a listing of upcoming events focused on gender equality.
