The Marguerite Casey Foundation is accepting applications for its 2019 Journalism Fellowships and Scholarships on Poverty program. Through the program, the foundation aims to support journalistic work that helps the public and policy makers understand how families are working for solutions to poverty and equity in communities across the United States.
In the richest country in the world, tens of millions of Americans still live in poverty. The foundation believes that no family should live in poverty and works to support change for and by families.
The foundation is particularly interested in stories about poverty, families, and solutions (such as policy, community and grassroots) in Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Tennessee, and Texas.
Fellowships awarded through the program include a stipend of $4,000 and up to $1,000 for travel expenses. Scholarships awarded through the program include a stipend of $2,000 and up to $1,000 for associated travel costs.
The program is open to residents of any state or U.S. territory (except for legal or blood relatives of foundation board members or employees). Applicants must be a journalist with at least three years of journalism experience, or a student enrolled in a graduate program or two- or four-year college. Freelance and contract writers, editors, and content producers for the foundation, as well as past Journalism Fellows and Scholars, are ineligible for a grant through the program.
Past recipients of fellowships and scholarships have published their foundation-supported journalism in and on a variety of outlets, including Scalawag, the Chronicle of Social Change, The Body, The Nation, BuzzFeed, Alaska Public Media, NPR’s “Latino USA,” PRI’s “The World,” Norwood News, Rural America - In These Times, Narratively and Oregon Public Broadcasting.
Applications are due September 25, 2019. The foundation will announce the names of four fellows and two scholarship winners in December.
