American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons Accepting Applications for Career Development Grants

The primary mission of the Research Foundation of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons is to raise and award funds to support research and educational programs related to colon and rectal diseases. Over the past twenty years, the foundation has awarded more than a hundred and twenty grants totaling $4 million to colorectal surgeons and researchers in support of their efforts to investigate a broad spectrum of colorectal diseases and to develop novel surgical techniques pertinent to the care of colorectal patients.

The goal of the foundation's Career Development Award is to provide young surgeons with the support necessary for the initiation and development of an academic career in colorectal surgery. The CDA focuses on career development and mentorship of the individual rather than solely on the research proposal. The award is intended for the academic investigator demonstrating significant creativity in research relevant to the pathophysiology or management of diseases of the small bowel, colon, rectum, or anus.

Grants of up to $75,000 per year for two years will be awarded through the program.

To be eligible, applicants must be within five years of their first full-time faculty appointment in the United States or Canadian government, public, or private nonprofit medical institution; a U.S. or Canadian citizen having completed an approved colorectal surgery training program; and an ASCRS member. In addition, applicants must not currently have or have previously received a career development award from another external funding source.

See the ASCRS website for complete program guidelines and application instructions.
