Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Audit Report

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Audit Report

The California Endowment (TCE) is making progress in strengthening its "culture of equity" through a shared vision of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI); changes in organizational policies and structure; and increased staff skill and engagement in implementing core DEI values, an audit commissioned by the foundation finds. Based on surveys of and interviews with staff and board members conducted by Social Policy Research Associates (SPR), the 2016 Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Audit Report (72 pages, PDF) — the fourth commissioned by TCE since 2008 — found that the racial/ethnic diversity of the endowment's staff and board exceeded that of the broader field of philanthropy and closely mirrors that of California's population, with the percentage of Latino, Asian/Pacific Islander, and multiracial staff increasing slightly. The percentage of Native American staff has remained flat, however, while the percentage of African-American and white staff and those with a disability has been on a downward trend. The audit also found that TCE had made excellent or good progress on seven of its DEI goals, including serving diverse communities and addressing DEI through grantmaking, while it had made some or no progress on six targets, including collecting diversity-related data about grantees.
