Teaching Artist Companion to Aesthetic Perspectives: Attributes of Excellence in Arts for Change

A publication from the Animating Democracy program at Americans for the Arts offers guidance for teaching artists who are engaging K-12 children and youth in "arts for change" — making art as a way to ask questions, imagine new possibilities, and promote action for positive change in their communities. Teaching Artist Companion to Aesthetic Perspectives: Attributes of Excellence in Arts for Change (34 pages, PDF), builds on a 2017 report that described eleven attributes that heighten the potency and effectiveness of arts for change efforts, including cultural integrity, communal meaning, disruption, and risk-taking; provides examples of creative projects that describe the intent of arts for change, on-the-ground practice, the aesthetic attributes in play, and questions to guide teaching artists' practice; offers examples of the work of program designers, organization leaders, and evaluators who support teaching artists working in the arena of arts for change; and provides an observation rubric for assessing processes and quality practices that promote student growth and contribute to effectiveness in teaching artistry. The publication was made possible with support from the Nathan Cummings Foundation and Hemera Foundation
