Carleton College Receives $20 Million for Music Commons

Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, has announced a $20 million gift from the Weitz family to add a music performance commons to the Weitz Center for Creativity.

The gift from Barbara ('70) and Wallace ('70) Weitz and their family — including their children, Katie ('96), Roger ('99), Roger's wife, Kate, and Drew ('02) and his wife, Meredith ('02), will support a planned $36 million addition to the center to house the college's music program and replace the existing concert hall with a new space of high acoustic quality. As rehearsal spaces, the music resource library, and teaching studios are relocated to the space, the facilities will support a broad range of music and performance needs and serve to further integrate creativity across disciplines.

The addition will include a four-hundred-seat performance hall, rehearsal spaces for individuals and small groups, faculty offices and studios, and gathering lounges for before and after performances. The addition also will include thirteen individual practice rooms, six practice/teaching studios, and eleven teaching studios. Construction, scheduled to begin this month, is expected to be completed in the summer of 2017.

In 2007, the Weitz family gave a $15 million gift to establish Weitz Center. The family is the largest single donor in Carleton history, after making a $25 million gift to the college's last campaign.

"I'm thrilled that Carleton's music department will have new facilities that match the excellence of the curriculum and faculty, as well as the music-making and music-appreciating opportunities on campus," said Roger Weitz, who earned a music degree from the college. "Music is an integral part of the lives of so many Carleton students, both music majors and non-music majors alike. I hope these new facilities will help add to the number of both."
