The Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut in New London has announced that six community foundations in the state have joined forces to award a $100,000 grant to the Connecticut Mirror in support of two journalism series, one that explores the long-term impact of Connecticut's fiscal crisis on the nonprofit sector and the other focused on the impact of wealth disparities in the state. The participating community foundations include the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, Fairfield County's Community Foundation, the Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut, the Connecticut Community Foundation (serving greater Waterbury and the Litchfield Hills), and Main Street Community Foundation (Bristol).

The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven has announced that the Morris and Irmgard Wessel Fund, one of its affiliate funds, has awarded its Unsung Heroes Award to the Immigrant Bail Fund and Doreen Abubakar. Established in 2017, the Immigrant Bail Fund pays bond for immigrants — some of whom are undocumented and some who are legal residents accused of minor crimes — who otherwise would be held in jail while they wait for resolution of their cases. Abubakar, a social entrepreneur and environmental educator, is the founder of the Community Placemaking and Engagement Network (CPEN), which focuses on family fitness and outdoor recreation.

The Philadelphia Foundation has announced that it is partnering with Catchafire, an online service that matches professionals with nonprofits based on their skills, interests, and availability, to provide nonprofits in the greater Philadelphia area with free consulting support in the areas of marketing and communications, Web development, operations, strategic planning, and more. In 2017, the foundation launched a year-long pilot program with the service, during which nonprofits in the region benefited from more than fifty-one hundred hours donated by Catchafire's pool of skilled volunteers.
