Community Foundation Update (5/13/17)

Alaska
The Juneau Community Foundation has announced $7,000 in scholarships from the Margaret Frans Brady Fund in support of fourteen students pursuing excellence in the arts. The fund was established in 2012, and the next year the family established a separate fund that to date has awarded nearly $32,000 in scholarships.
California
The East Bay Community Foundation in Oakland has announced that the fourth annual East Bay Gives campaign earlier this month raised nearly $1.1 million, with more than eighty-five hundred donors making donations in support of area nonprofits.
The San Francisco Foundation has named Sonja Velez as its chief financial officer. Velez, an independent management consultant, previously served as chief financial officer for the Democratic Voice of Burma, where she oversaw donor and regulatory reporting, accounting, budgeting, human resources, and administrative functions.
Colorado
The Community Foundation Boulder County has announced $15,000 in grants to four organizations working to overcome educational inequities among local youths as part of the foundation's 15 Forever Fund. Recipients include Collegiate Crossings, the "I Have a Dream" Foundation Boulder County, Legacy of Learning, and the YWCA Boulder County.
Hawai'i
The Hawai'i Community Foundation in Honolulu has named Micah Kane as its new CEO, effective July 1. Currently president and chief operating officer at the foundation, Kane will succeed Kelvin Taketa, who will continue to serve as a part-time senior fellow.
Kentucky
The Community Foundation of Louisville has announced a new name, platform, and support features for its annual online giving event. The Give for Good Louisville event on September 14 will use the GiveGab platform, which is expected to deliver enhanced training resources for nonprofits, improved peer-to-peer fundraising opportunities, and faster gift processing than was the case in previous events. Last year, Giving Day events across the country experienced technology-related glitches.
New Jersey
The Northern New Jersey Community Foundation in Englewood has announced that during Earth Week in April, the foundation’s Community Engagement Program collected and donated art supplies to the Teaneck Creek Conservancy. With the items, the conservancy will be able to boost the number of art and science programs it hosts.
North Carolina
The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina in Asheville has awarded two grants to the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy in support of agricultural programs, the Citizen-Times reports. To be matched by a grant from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program, a grant of $29,500 will support an expansion of the organization’s agricultural business incubator for new farmers and an educational workshop series at the SAHC Community Farm. A second grant of $16,000 will support WNC Farm Link, a program designed to foster stronger relationships between farmers and landowners hoping to keep their farm and forest land in agriculture.
The Stanly County Community Foundation, an affiliate of the Foundation for the Carolinas, has announced that it raised $123,000, exceeding its goal for a $100,000 matching gift it received last fall. The anonymous matching gift was made in memory of C.B. Crook, a founding board member of SCCF who passed away last May.
Ohio
Cleveland State University has announced a grant of $200,000 from the Cleveland Foundation in support of a partnership with Case Western Reserve University to expand research on and educational opportunities related to the Internet of Things (IoT), the rapidly growing interconnected network of devices and sensors connected to the Internet. The grant was part of the foundation’s Digital Excellence Initiative, which invests in efforts to create a more connected regional community, drive digital skills-development, improve digital civic engagement, advance digital leadership in the region, and encourage technology innovation for social good.
