California

The Oceanside Charitable Foundation, an affiliate of the San Diego Foundation, has announced grants totaling $60,000 to three organizations working to prevent hunger and homelessness in the region and assist those who are homeless. Recipients include the Oceanside Senior Citizen Association ($10,000), the Brothers Benno Association's Care for Hungry and Homeless Neighbors program ($25,000), and the New Directions Transition Housing-Turning Hope Into a Home project ($25,000).

Idaho

The Pauline Becker and Dorothy Simplot Memorial Endowment Fund has been established with a $3 million gift to the Idaho Community Foundation, the Idaho Business Review reports. The fund will provide approximately $45,000 each annually to the Boise Philharmonic, Ballet Idaho, and Opera Idaho.

Massachusetts

The Boston Foundation has announced that Match High School was named the 2016 winner of the Pozen Prize for Innovative Schools. The $80,000 prize recognizes academic excellence and quality learning environments in Greater Boston charter schools.

Pennsylvania

The Pittsburgh Foundation has announced that Sol Crespo, a New York-based actor, writer, director and producer, has been named this year's Eben Demarest Trust Fund grantee. Each year, the Demarest Trust solicits nominations from a rotating pool of colleges, universities, and nonprofit arts and culture organizations. The trust, which is administered by the foundation, supports the work of independent creative artists and archeologists across the United States. Crespo will use the $20,000 award to create original work and pursue collaborations with those who have traditionally lacked a platform for artistic expression, including women and performers of color.

Washington

The Seattle Foundation has announced the 2016 winners of the Healthy Community Corporate Champion Awards, which it awards in partnership with the Puget Sound Business Journal. The awards recognize the commitment and impact of local businesses and highlight how the community is strengthened through the dedication and innovation of the corporate sector, in partnership with the public and social sectors. This year’s award winners are Aegis Living, Boeing, Brown Bear Car Wash, Expedia, MCM, MOD Pizza, POP Multimedia, and Stokes Lawrence.

Wisconsin

The Greater Milwaukee Foundation has announced seed funding for two University of Wisconsin scientists who have been awarded the foundation’s 2016 Shaw Scientist Award. at UW-Madison's Feyza Engin, assistant professor of biomolecular chemistry, and Srivatsan Raman, assistant professor of biochemistry, will each receive $200,000 to advance their work. Engin's research addresses type 1 diabetes by examining how dysfunction in the organelles — of beta cells may cause the disease. Raman's research seeks to unravel the molecular mystery behind "allostery," a property that allows proteins to change shape by sensing and responding to signals inside a cell.
