The University of Central Florida and the University of Memphis have each announced an estate gift commitment of $13 million from Gary Bryant and his wife, Barbara, in support of scholarships for student athletes.
The gift to UCF, the largest ever in support of UCF athletics, will establish the Gary and Barbara Bryant Family Athletic Endowed Scholarship Fund for student athletes. "We appreciate Gary and Barbara's investment in our educational and athletic mission at UCF," said UCF vice president and director of athletics Danny White. "Their family legacy at UCF will forever provide life-changing scholarship opportunities for hundreds of young men and women to pursue their academic, athletic, and personal dreams through the student-athlete experience."
The gift to the University of Memphis will establish the Gary W. and Barbara Bryant Family Trusts and the Gary and Barbara Bryant Athletic Excellence Fund, an endowment to be funded through the family estate. Funds provided by the endowment will be used at the discretion of the Memphis athletics department in keeping with its overall vision for student athletes.
"We are incredibly grateful for this transformative gift that will impact the department and student-athletes for generations to come," stated University of Memphis interim athletics director Allie Prescott. "The foresight shown by Gary and Barbara in making this commitment is humbling. We are grateful for their commitment and passion to Memphis Athletics."
"Barbara and I have always participated in sports and believe in the transformational, door-opening value of a college education," said Bryant. "We made this commitment to enable student-athletes to get an education and compete in the sport they love at our hometown university. We feel very fortunate to be able to make this commitment and hope other community and alumni friends will support Orlando's Hometown Team."
