Florida Hospital Foundation Receives $1.5 Million Kresge Challenge Grant

The Morton Plant Mease Foundation in Clearwater, Florida, has received a $1.5 million challenge grant from the Kresge Foundation in Troy, Michigan, for construction of a new cardiac care hospital, the St. Petersburg Times reports.

The Mease Foundation, which supports the hospitals of Morton Plant Mease Health Care, had to raise at least $7.8 million in matching funds over eighteen months in order to receive the grant — the first from a national grantmaker Mease has received. Of the $8 million the hospital raised, $5 million was donated by Larry and Patty Morgan, the main benefactors of the new $52 million Morgan Heart Hospital.

According to Mease Foundation president and CEO Holly Duncan, meeting the requirements of the challenge grant demonstrated to Kresge, and perhaps other foundations, the connection the hospitals have with the community. "We are hopeful we will be able to springboard from the Kresge grant to other [national grant] opportunities," Duncan said. "Once you receive funding from one of these organizations, it becomes a part of your credentials."
