The Indianapolis-based Lumina Foundation has announced a three-year, $15 million commitment in support of efforts to eradicate systemic racism.
The commitment will support the foundation's Fund for Racial Justice and Equity, which is dedicated to advancing social justice initiatives both within Indiana and nationally, with a focus on social justice organizations and efforts aligned with Lumina's mission to expand access to high-quality postsecondary education.
The commitment includes a partnership with Eli Lilly & Co.'s corporate foundation to create the Central Indiana Racial Equity Fund at the Central Indiana Community Foundation. Launched with an initial $2 million, the fund will support organizations focused on facilitating difficult conversations about race in Indiana and the nation; efforts to address racial inequities, especially those involving the criminal justice system; and data-driven approaches to combating racism at the local level.
"[W]e know that to establish a just and fair society," the foundation said in its announcement, "we have a moral responsibility to take on the nation's sordid past — and to push for the conversation and action we will need to resolve racial challenges."
